Christmas Advent Calendar, Activity Style
It's officially December and day TWO of our activity advent calendar! I found this neat idea by happenstance on my Pinterest feed (the rabbit hole) from Babyccino Kids, whom I have admired and followed on social media for a couple years now. It's rare I actually FOLLOW THROUGH with any of these craft ideas I pin, but this one stuck for some reason. It could be because I was sort of in the market for a new advent calendar and had grandiose ideas of making one with all those different sized pockets to hide cool things in, like in the Land of Nod catalog. but when I saw this PAPER one, and FREE, I was immediately inspired! I only found it this week, and it was so simple to prep, and I had everything already. I had it ready in time for December 1st! What?! What is an activity advent calendar? Well, a countdown to Christmas, but rather than opening up a little box for the day and finding a chocolate or a trinket, we open up a little paper envelope and find a special, winter or holiday activity to do! I LOVED this idea! I already had several things in mind for us to do this holiday season anyway, but I really was attracted to the idea of having a countdown to Christmas, and also adding in simple, sweet family things as well. Some things you might already be doing! They have a few blank ones in to write out your own and swap if you want to as well which I did. Instead of roasting chestnuts on a fire, we are going to build a ginger bread house! Instead of sticking pokey cloves into oranges, apparently called pomanders, we are going to make snowmen out of cotton balls! Some of my favorites have nothing to do with buying any supplies at all, or even leaving the house. One is simply to take about what your are thankful for. Another I am excited for is having a picnic by the Christmas tree!
Yesterday for example, I decided to do the winter walk to find natural decoration for the house- pretty red leaves, twigs, fallen pieces of greenery from pine trees, pine cones. It was a PERFECT day for a nature walk/scoot! A bit brisk, but we had a great time getting outdoors! It has been frigid here in Denver so a dose of vitamin D was in order. It also led perfectly into a craft we are doing for day 2, today! More coming soon!
They had all the activities already and the designed envelopes, all you have to do is print, fold, add a little dabble of glue, some washi tape for some pizzaz, if you want, and string them up somewhere! They had them along a beautiful branch! I decided to string them on a garland I already had along a mirror in our dining room, something I already had up before I found out about this. What I love about creative ideas like these are they are a GUIDE! I love making it our own, tailoring it to suit our family with two littles and putting our own spin on it.
Do you follow an advent calendar?! Happy December everyone!
Wearing: I LOVE a great shift dress on Remy right now! Some of her other dresses were a little too oversize, but I love the fit of a shorter dress to show her adorable legs. These are on my wish list for her: Gold with stars by Appaman and $23!!! This red and black check flannel one, perfect for holiday, by Toobydoo, and this quirky cartoon one by Stella McCartney Kids. Her black glitter tights are from Target and her boots are from The Children's Place, which we got half off a couple weeks ago. Her jacket is by Tea Collection that I bought from a boutique when she was a baby. Here's an almost identical one, also by Tea Collection, in gray at Nordstrom Rack and on sale for $30!
Arlo is wearing a Zara dress, handed down from Remy which we bought when she was a baby when we spent Christmas in New York! I loved the mod look and the pockets! Here are a couple ADORABLE mod dresses here and here. Her tights are Cat & Jack from Target and her boots are Tommy Hilfiger.
