Big B's Orchard Cider & Swings
One of our favorite places across the divide, a Colorado phrase for crossing the Rocky Mountains to the western slope, is visiting Big B’s Orchard! My Dad introduced us to the place and now it is a MUST every time we are out that way. We went back in June but nothing was quite ready for picking since the season had a late start this year…snowing through May. But we definitely grabbed a picnic table and had some Big B’s cider while the girls came for the rope swinging.
We made our way out there this trip too, Labor Day weekend, and it always starts the same- swings and ciders! (The girls have fresh lemonade slushies!) My favorite is the Awesome Sauce cider, made from a French yeast, just zippie and fresh and, well, anything French for me!
We actually went to Big B’s TWICE this trip! The girls had wanted to do some orchard picking and we didn’t have time the first visit, because we went into Paonia that day for ice cream at Ollie’s. The second trip out there, we made sure to get baskets and get to the back. I don’t usually pick myself, I let the girls explore and lead and let my Dad and stepmother take the reigns and I am happy to follow along documenting them and popping in and out of seeing them find things. It’s always so HOT too, we never last long. Arlo found a few special rasberries, not even worth it to put on the scale really, and for some reason the girls kept selecting rather questionable apples. Dad did a great “Pa” sort of thing and swooped in at the end and, I think he swapped some apples for more appealing ones, and bought the bounty for the girls. Thanks Pa!
I just noticed after downloading these photos that Arlo only has one sock on! And the socks she chose were the tall ones! I can always count on Arlo for a last minute stubborn styling switch up- always. Remy is the sweetest and that one tooth missing since February now is still making its way down, I LOVE her little “window” as her Baba calls it. Speaking of Baba, he missed this trip as he was in California playing a soccer tournament.
We did spot some grapes on the vines as well, but they weren’t quite sweet yet, but man they are so darn picturesque! Another favorite thing out west is wine tasting! I don’t get to wine tasting as often as I’d like, but my Dad bought me a lovely bottle from a local winery which was so thoughtful- and delicious! Thanks Dad!
Some sweet memories out at the orchard…
