Colorado Ballet Academy Dance Camp
Whew! Not sure if Remy is more tired or momma! We just wrapped up a week of morning classes at the Colorado Ballet Academy for their Creative Dance Camp! It was a week of hustle and bustle getting these two CRAZY ACTIVE girls fed breakfast, dressed, diapered, potted, snack/ballet bags packed, lunch packed, water bottles....getting us to and from ballet downtown at the new home of Colorado Ballet at the Armstrong Center at 10th and Santa Fe, and then trying to handle Arlo's energy and anxiousness to want to join big sister and her class, lee her occupied, happy and entertained and NOT fussing to go into the studio when she became too antsy to stay in....tricky, and exhausting! My normal momma complaints aside, how did Remy enjoy it?! Well, to be honest, I think it was a SHOCK to her! She had done a small stint at Pre-School last fall, before we decided on keeping her home, so it has been nearly a year since she has had to listen to another adult besides momma or baba. I wasn't sure how I felt about enrolling her in ballet period, until she was old enough to tell me she had an interest on going. I studied at, what was then called, the Academy of Colorado Ballet, back in the nineties, pre-professionally. I did not start dancing however until I was much older! Like 9 or 10! I started out as a gymnast. Speaking of, go Simone Giles!!! The air on that girl! And Aly... I LOVE watching the summer Olympics for these American born gymnasts! Go U.S.A.!!!
So, back to enrolling Remy into a dance camp. Why? Well, I wanted to see if there was any spark of interest there yet, which, truthfully, I don't think there is... YET! FINGERS CROSSED! Like a child who first goes off to school full time, they miss mom, they miss home, they feel like they're missing out. I saw a little bit of that in Remy on Thursday after I dropped her. We stayed in the class for the introduction circle time, and the stretching and the beginning movements, and then snuck out to let Remy focus and have her class on her own, and then I snuck in again later on at the end of the class when they did a craft. Arlo is showing an enthusiasm and excitement for dance! Have you seen her moves on Instagram?! She LOVEs the beat! She grabbed her ballet slippers, the CUTEST things, every morning and HAD to put them on, yelling, "Bah-YAY!" Demanding I put them on and shoving them in my face, "BA-YAY!" She even learned to count to eight and hold hands right alongside the three year olds and she marched across that floor as good as any of them!
This creative dance camp caught my attention because Colorado Ballet Academy is a reputable, and renowned ballet school with actual, classical ballet instruction. What peaks my interest and makes me want to come back when Remy is ready for professional training, if there is a desire, IS the instructors, the facility, the staff, the care and attention to each student! I was SO impressed, TRULY, amazed really, at the instructor for this age group. Erica, was attentive, sweet, excited, showed BIG personality and expression when describing things, used THEIR language so they could understand in a way I never thought of. She got them to listen, follow along, and LEARN in just FIVE days! Her sing-song voice and expressive face, gentle touch and genuine concern for each little person in that room was remarkable. She is a true star! I felt so confident leaving Remy that by day five, I completely did a drop off, minus the photos and felt content and happy that she was in good hands AND having a good time learning about dance!
Did I mention the art/craft projects she came home with every day?! Not only did Erica teach them about the rhythm of music, felt in their heartbeats as she tapped her tambourine, she also gathered them around to glue and color and engaged them in a craft relating to the dance lesson that day. A construction paper mouse for the day they danced in tiny little steps like a mouse. A butterfly for the first day when they got to spin around and flab their wings with scarves. A flamingo for the day they attempted to stand on one leg...Remy LOVED this part of the class too!
We had such an amazing, and FULL week at the Colorado Ballet Academy and made such sweet little bonds with our fellow classmates. There is another Creative Dance Camp happening next week too, in this age group, threes, as well as other age groups! There are several spots left so register TODAY! If you miss out on the camps, look into the regular season with weekly classes. AS everyone headed back to school and their routines again, it was a fun way for the girls and I to make our own routine and dedicate our mornings to something special together. The drive in was a wonderful experience, passing the water, the Platte River, and the hospital, Denver Health, and then our drive home when we went underneath the bridge along Speer. While we had to take a pause from some other weekly outings and play dates, I thought it was a good lesson in discipline and dedication to something, anything. THOSE are ideals I want to instill in my girls, whatever they decide to do. Dancing, swimming, RUNNING, or doodling, I hope they find something they are passionate about and then give it regular attention and love to see it blossom.
Now for the most adorable photos of these tiny ballerinas!
