Kidtopia Kool at Shops at Southlands
Wednesday was a LONG one! We had a play date in the morning at Westlands park, came home for lunch and relaxation, and refuge from this HEAT and then we spontaneously decided to refresh, reboot and we ran to Southlands Mall to catch their LAST Kidtopia event this June!
I was editing photos and past blog posts, cleaning it up, and the girls wandered over and I was sharing videos of them from a couple years ago. They love when they see videos of themselves as babies- I should do that more! It is fun for all of us I guess to see a glimpse into the past. This post came up from Kidtopia at Southlands the last time we went, see the post here, and it reminded me that it was happening again this June! Then I looked at the calendar on my phone and realized this week was the LAST Wednesday in June! I quickly checked their Facebook page for information, and we could catch it, if we hurried! The girls were just as excited as me! Husband picked up a shift so he would not be able to join us, which meant a low key dinner for us girls anyway, so we changed and grabbed some fruit and nuts as a snack and got in the car!
I had a plan to do what we did last time, which was to eat dinner there, in fact we ate at Tokyo Joe's this time around as well. It's affordable, and right off the main area where the event takes place, and it's fresh, good food. We share a chicken, veggie rice bowl, and it works out great! The girls wanted to sit outside, despite the sweltering heat, but by the time we got food the sun was setting and it did cool down a bit and the lights turned on! They had just as much fun climbing underneath these giant concrete "x" structures which we picnicked on, and they met a kiddo in line at the restaurant whom they chatted up about her bike that she had rode over on with her family from nearby.
Of COURSE we HAD to start with the jumpy castle! The girls had a bounce, and then we made our way to the lawn to watch an experiment presentation by Mad Science group. The show was quite lengthy and I wanted the girls to visit some of the stands before the event ended so I snuck them away to launch paper rockets with an air pump set up by the Museum of Nature and Science. That was FUN! If they had a little more time, and were a couple years older, they would have constructed their own rockets, but given their ages, we decided to skip the "making" part and just shoot them down their little runway. They shot them out of the atmosphere! That was fun!
We also visited the Wings Over Rockies Museum table and they made little straw propellers. A Farmer's Insurance stand had crafts to make mini lava lamps with glitter and sequins inside water bottles. We pit stopped at the playground area to climb around and we rejoined the group for the presentation. We caught the best part at the end where Combustive Caren showed the kids how to make carbon dioxide bubbles! She also used gas to put air in a balloon and let it fly- the girls got a kick out of that!
We checked out the face painting, but the line was lengthy for that and we still hadn't ate at that point, plus the girl at the end said she was the last person. Thankfully we didn't have any upsets, we meandered down to Tokyo Joe's and finished the night with dinner alfresco together! It's RARE the girls are out past the sunset! It's nice sometimes to deviate from routine to ENJOY summer nights and long days together. We caught a GORGEOUS sunset on the walk back to the car and we drove home with the windows down, a summer breeze whipping our hair around and singing to music! It was a good day.
So glad we caught the Kidtopia event at Southlands again! Looks like we completely missed it last year. They do it every Wednesday in June, so unfortunately they are through with that for the season, but it looks like they have lots of other great things going on- check their events page on their website, or their Facebook page. Looks like they will have movies on the square this summer too! Coco will play on Wednesday July 18th at dusk! Fun!
Looking forward to spending more sweet summer nights and experiencing sunset strolls with my girls this summer! Thank you to Shops at Southlands for a wonderful, FREE, family event.
