Vail Colorado Family Day Visit
Last Saturday we took a mini day trip up to Vail, Colorado! Every year husband plays in a soccer tournament. The first year I went, when we were dating, they won! My how trips to Vail have changed since then! We went from renting a room up there and dancing until late in the evening down in the village to packing up two toddlers at 6 am the morning of game day and barely making it through lunch before having to head back home! BUT, we had a great family day, and we STILL had Pazzo's Pizza!
The girls handled the car ride fantastically! We woke them early and gave them their milk in the car. I had bought these magic marker color pads from the Dollar Spot section at Target the night before for when they at started to get antsy, and I grabbed a few different books for the car toy bin which held their interest for long while. Neither one went back to sleep! They were too excited and interested in what this new experience was! We made it to Vail in record time and stopped at McDonald's for breakfast Egg McMuffin's (no meat) and two of those cute little pet toys from Secret Life of Pets. They loved that!
We made it to Baba's first game kick off at 10 am and even saw him score a goal! Husband's brother also plays on the same team and his wife and new baby came up for the day too which was nice! The girls were VERY good for the most part! I showed them an ice chest to keep them occupied for the remainder of the game, and we were all sitting comfortably in the shade of an umbrella, and they were happily playing with the ice and keeping cool until Arlo's finger got squished in the lid. Oops... intentional or unintentional on her big sister's part. I had overheard Remy trying to keep Arlo out of her "jewelry box," so that may have had something to do with the tears. Besides that, they were such sweet girls, sidling up to the guys on the bench and pushing their baby cousin in his stroller on the side lines.
In between games we headed to Safeway for fresh fruit, water, and a few snacks. I had packed sandwiches and other things for the day as well. We were trying to coordinate to do a quick dip in the pool at one of the guys' hotels, but we made it over there and it didn't look that safe for kiddos, and we didn't have much time as it was, especially with two kids. We nixed that idea and headed tot he second field for the next game. We found a perfect shady spot under the trees and a light breeze picked up. The views up there are solo pretty!
The next game was pretty good, from the way husband describes it. I wouldn't know. By this time, we were all hot, tired, hungry and spent. We looked at our books, and we checked out the baby on the blanket, and then I tried to take the girls for a walk to see if they might nap, but they didn't! By then, their cousins had made it up, my husband's older brother and his three girls. The spark and energy in them was lit! They sat on the sidelines with their cousins and watched the remainder of that game. I can't tell you how well behaved they really were! I was the one who was tired! Chasing them and sunscreening them and watering them and feeding them and entertaining them and diapering and potty trips...again, not the leisurely soccer trips of yester year!
We all headed into Vail Village for a bite to eat after the game. We always have ate at Pazzo's Pizza and so we suggested that. We didn't think a table would suit the needs of all the kids, especially mine who had been up since 6 am and missed their usual 2-3 hour nap! GULP! So we got several pizzas to go and sat in the huge community lawn area and let the kids run free! There was corn hole games and fly fishing practice reels and plenty of faux grass to run around on! There was even speakers with great music and I danced around and spun my girls round and round! I never really play corn hole, but it was fun showing the girls how to toss the bean bag and Remy actually did pretty good! Arlo even got the drift and was dropping the bags in the holes.
We headed back after that, skipping out on our Marble Slab Creamery stop, and the girls zonked out immediately! Great news was they both woke themselves up before getting home and we made it through the evening and they made a relatively normal bed time.
A successful Vail day trip! I know I complained A LOT, but it really wasn't that tricky and the girls were EXCELLENT, and I am so glad we did it. Baba wanted his girls to see him play soccer, and we also got to spend time together doing something HE LOVES for once! We love you Baba! Congrats on a successful soccer trip this year! So close! Nice goals and assists...from my favorite soccer player.
